Cannabis: What's legal and what's not?
What are the latest cannabis laws?
Are you having trouble keeping up with the constantly changing laws regarding cannabis? It can be hard to stay current.
Where is it legal? How are CBD and hemp products viewed differently? Can you get on a plane with your legally purchased marijuana?
While it’s tough to remain 100% on top of cannabis-related news, here are four things to be aware of.
1. As of July 2019, 11 states (plus the District of Columbia) have legalized recreational cannabis use for adults. In addition, 34 states have some form of medical marijuana program.
2. Several states have decriminalized and reduced the penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana. For example, Illinois passed a law allowing the automatic expungement of arrests for possession under 30 grams, and California is in the process of clearing thousands of records of people who were previously convicted of certain marijuana-related crimes.
3. Cannabis is still considered illegal under federal law and interstate travel with marijuana is prohibited. That means the Transportation Security Administration could arrest you even though local law enforcement allows you to enter the airport with legally purchased marijuana.
4. In some states, you’re able to buy or possess CBD and hemp, but not medical or recreational marijuana. The laws surrounding CBD and hemp usually pertain to the amount of THC in the product, so it’s important to educate yourself about what you’re consuming to stay on the right side of the law.
